Shielded storage and transport solutions

Calder has a vast experience of working with, and understanding, the nuclear industry and has developed a variety of products especially for this sector.

Product details

Calder design and supply portable lead transport pots, which are used when small volumes of radioactive material need to be transported around a facility safely.

Storage and transport solutions can be designed and manufactured with integrated wheels and handles, or to be used with existing handling equipment. They are designed to be easy to use, even whilst wearing protective equipment, or inside a glove-box.

Calder offer a bespoke design and manufacture service, for more specialist applications such as stainless-steel or copper lined lead pots as well as a range of finishes and coatings.

Lead fills and fabrications

Lead fabrications that are required for critical shielding applications or to hold radioactive materials, can be lined with lead to provide the necessary shielding.

Calder offers two methods of lead lining, to accommodate different vessels and circumstances.

Hot filling involves casting molten lead directly into a container or vessel under carefully controlled conditions to prevent formation of voids and shrinkage cavities. Our hot filling process can also be complemented by thermal management of the cooling process for larger fills, and the addition of final product testing to validate the shielding integrity and confirm the absence of any significant voids.

An alternative approach is cold filling is where we line a vessel with rolled, extruded or machined lead to an appropriate thickness.

In both cases, collaboration between Calder and the Customer is vital to ensure the design of the vessel is suitable for the filling or fabricating process. Our extensive knowledge and experience in carrying out fills for nuclear applications means we can support your vessel design to suit the process and therefore ensure reliable performance in service.

Lead lined safes

Calder offer a range of secure and practical lead lined safes, which are ideal for the storage of radioactive materials. Our range of free-standing lead lined safes, have a mild steel outer case lined with either 12 mm, 25 mm or 50 mm thick lead depending upon the protection necessary, and other thicknesses can be designed where required.

The interior of all our lead lined safes can be finished in stainless steel or copper and can include a lead lined drawer if required. Choose from three different sizes which all feature a lockable, full width, lead lined door that is hung on heavy duty hinges with a lockable latch.

Calder also offer a bespoke service where we can design and manufacture lead safes to any size, any thickness and any configuration required with casings in either mild steel or stainless steel, and with any combination of stainless steel, copper, borated polyethylene inner layers or linings.
