It is important that the correct thickness of lead is specified for the source, which can only be done by a qualified expert Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA). Most shielding for use in the UK will be specified using British Standard code numbers shown below defined in BS EN 12588.
Calder recommend the use of British Standard BS EN 12588 rolled sheet lead as this is assured and certified to meet the required shielding standards, however other globally recognised sheet lead standards can be supplied on request.
Although only milled lead manufactured to BS EN 12588 uses this thickness coding and colour system, it is always best to also refer to the British Standard when specifying sheet lead.
Lead lined shielding boards
Standard lead shielding panel sizes are 600mm wide by 2400mm in length. They are manufactured by bonding BS EN 12588 lead under pressure to standard plasterboard or plywood. Other substrates and non-standard sizes can also be manufactured if required.
For installation the panels are fastened to either an existing wall, stud partition, or support frame.
To ensure the elimination of shine paths and the integrity of the x-ray shield lead strips 50mm wide known as fillets and / or lead lined battens must be used where the edges of the boards meet.
Calder’s lead lined boards can be easily installed by a competent contractor by following the installation guidance. Our boards are available supply-only for customer / contractor installation, however if an installation service is required we would be happy to refer you to known and trusted independent installation contractors.
Floors and ceilings
For code shielding on floors and ceilings panels are manufactured using plywood (normally 12mm) for added strength. For ceiling installations, panel sizes are reduced so that the weight is easier to handle.
