Subsea ballast

Across the world offshore or subsea equipment provides critical national and international services, whether for telecommunications, oil and gas supply, or offshore renewable energy sources. These are connected by an increasingly complex network of subsea cables and equipment, with cables crossing cables all over the sea-bed.

A range of cable management and protection systems are deployed to ensure these cables continue to function with minimal maintenance and without risk of damaging each other in the hostile subsea environment. Some of these systems require bespoke ballast systems to ensure cables stay in place even during storms and tidal surges.

Lead ballast is frequently used in these applications because of its unique properties. Its high density provides weight in the smallest volume, allowing the size of cable management systems to be minimised. Its corrosion resistance makes it ideal in a subsea environment, as lead resists corrosion even in the warm salt water of the worlds temperate and tropical oceans. Because of its low melting point it is well suited to casting into the required form, making it cost-effective versus more energy-intensive alternatives.
